I have the same idea and was just googling around and found this thread.

Has there been any progress?

I’ve just been browsing
http://cini.classiccmp.org/systems.htm#RWS

There’s a lot of info about the AIM 65 there.

My advice is to leave the (problematic) printer out of the design. It was only necesary because the original dislpay was single line so the user had no context. I hunted for cost effective thermal printer replacements that could operate at low baud rates for other old microprocessors and gave up. Given the amount of h/w change required to put in a modern display I would go for an OTS 4 line display that is driven by SPL or parallel i/f (4 lines for 4 bit data transfers and a couple more for status/control/strobe). 4 lines should provide enough history for most monitor operations. Of course if hard copy is required maybe an off-board vintage dot matrix. My ultimate hard copy choice for AIM 65 would be a teletype with paper tape for data I/O. Unfortunately these are very rare in Australia but I would think not for the USA?
