You can connect a 6502 to a serial port using a USART chip and a RS-232 level converter (MAX232). The 6502 series has (had) the 6551 Asynchronous Communications Interface Adapter. Does your kit have one installed? There are datasheets for the 6551 under the "Datasheets Archive & Parts Information" link at www.6502.org

There are many assemblers available. Look at the "Cross Development" Link on www.6502.org for several assemblers.

hope this helps.
