I am working on my first mircp project and was wondering, for mirco p's can I use a good clean squarewave 1:1 ratio instead of worrying about a pulse waveform.

At slow speeds (around 4MHz or so), it really doesn't matter what you use for a clock. But, as the speed increases, you really want to get a nice, clean 50% duty cycle for your clock. Otherwise, you run the risk of violating setup and hold times for the CPU and for memory devices.

Another advantage of using a 50% duty cycle is that you can multiplex the bus with another bus master without having to worry about DMA support hardware.
