At some point during covid I stumbled on some of Chris Crawford's old code and in particular his 6502 code for Eastern Front 1941 which I played long ago on a friend's Atari 800. I'd always been fascinated by how the game's AI worked and (perhaps heretically for this forum?) ended up doing a port from his 6502 assembler to typescript as I took it apart.
In any case it's super interesting to read Crawford's old notes and annotated disassembly, see some of his tricks, and amazing to see how much he packed into 12K including all the unit data, map and so on. Even found a bug or two! If you're interested you can play it and read lots more background here
