Hello everyone!

I was looking around the internet for a place to buy 65C816 chips. Preferably not DIP packaging, though I'd like to see whatever is available.

Mouser currently has around 80 DIP, 30 PLCC, and 80 TFP. In comparison, they have thousands of 65C02's! Jameco and Digikey currently do not have any 65C816's.

Where do you go to buy your 65C816's normally? Any other places, besides eBay and the like?

I know it's not as popular a chip, but WDC is still making them, right? Should I fear that they stop producing them sometime soon?

Thanks!

Chad

Mouser is the usual go-to ..

They have DIL, QFP and PLCC by the looks of it...

Yup, I've bought all of mine from Mouser so far.

And watching the stock over the years it bounces from 10s to 100s so they're still being bought and re-supplied.

Same here, got all of my DIP and PLCC stuff from Mouser for 6502, 65816, 6522, and 6551

They even have Z80 and Z180 parts if you want to mess with that CPU at all.

After that I've found that I can find some more older chips from Jameco:

I think you can still buy directly from WDC as well.  Do use our sticky topic "65xx parts sources, genuine and fake."

What's an additional VIA among friends, anyhow?

Note that WDC is a "fabless" semiconductor company, so while they design them, and in addition to licensing the design, they may well order a new batch produced if stocks get low ... technically they do not make the chips.

While Mouser does not list the W65C816S parts as New parts, at least they are listed as Active. If they go off of the Active list, we might take that as reason to be worried whether batches are going to continue to be produced when stocks run low.

Mouser lists parts as "New" if they are new designs, only just introduced to the catalogue. The current edition of the '816 has been in production for something like a decade, so "Active" is the appropriate status for them.

I didn't hear another source other than Mouser. I've bought quite a few W65C02 and W65C816 from Great Plains Electronics and they were much cheaper than Mouser. Too bad the owner decided to retire (great for the owner, so not good for 6502 enthusiasts).
