I'm going to go to a liquidation outlet this friday to get some chips for my 6502 computer. Are there any rare/useful/prototype chips that I should look out for?
I already plan to get 6522's, 6551's, and oscillators. Any other suggestions would be wonderful.

The 65 family used to include:

6520
6521 PIA
6522 VIA
6523 TPI
6524 PIAT
6525 TPI
6526 CIA
6529 single-port interface (20-pin)
6530 RAM, I/O, and Timer
6532 RAM, I/O, and Timer
6545 CRTC
6551 ACIA
6552 dual ACIA
6560 VIC (NTSC)
6561 VIC (PALB)
6567 VIC (NTSC)
6569 VIC (PALB) text
6572 VIC (PALN)
6573 VIC (PALM)
6582 SID
5710 FDC
8722 MMU
8360 Text-Editing Device
+other 8000-series that were directly 6502-compatible
(This list does not include the 20 or so 6502 variations like the 6508, or the 65-family microcontrollers, like the 65F11.)

but most of these have been out of production for many years and are rare. WDC is bringing the 65c21 and 65c51 back, and of course the '02, '816, '22, '265, and '134 have no planned end of production in sight; so anything else above could be interesting.

@GARTHWILSON:
could you help identify which ones are currently available and being produced, and what common existing alternatives exist for each of these?

WDC (Western Design Center) is the main supplier now.  See this page for their IC offerings:  https://wdc65xx.com/integrated-circuit

Daryl's 65SPI chip (not to be confused with 65SIB, the interface—I know the names are confusing) has been used by several forum members here.  It's an SPI that goes directly on the 6502's bus.  The original CPLD he used to make them became unavailable (probably discontinued because it was so power-hungry and ran hot), so he re-designed it to use the Atmel ATF1504 CPLD.  He no longer programs and sells them, but he does provide the code for you to program your own, at the linked page.

Other ICs, like for generating video, UARTs, etc. will usually be interfaced through one of the ICs referenced above, ie, not directly on the 6502's bus.

What's an additional VIA among friends, anyhow?

So its just the WDC offerings,

Could we step through some of these and identify functional alternatives?
