Choosing a license for your code can be tricky. There are people who find it too much and choose not to choose any license.

But that too is a choice, and does close off some possibilities, while it stands.

I have written before about licenses, and several threads have diverted temporarily into license discussions. I thought it would be good to have one thread.

In "Preferred License?" André Fachat and I discussed a license choice. (Neither of us are lawyers. If anything of value is at stake, or you are acting for a business, get legal advice.)

In that discussion, both of us were OK with commercial usage, but we wanted the sources we write to be available to all end-users, not locked away. LGPL fits this bill.

There is a flowchart for choosing a license which I've shared before:
Simple description of popular software licenses.

I would advise against writing your own license, even with legal help, if the legal help is not especially skilled in copyright law.
