Hello,
I've been reading this forum for quite some time now, and recently decided to actually make an account.
However to my dismay, firefox informed me that this website doesn't actually provide HTTPS.
As this is a forum where you can post and send PMs having all the information travel unencrypted from my computer to the server is a bit concerning, as anyone in between can read or even modify the this information.

With Let's Encrypt providing free certificates, I don't see any reason why this should be the case ?

It's not a bad idea, if it's easy to do (Mike, the site owner, might know), but I doubt that anyone is giving credit-card numbers or other sensitive information by PM.

What's an additional VIA among friends, anyhow?

Welcome! I know that Mike has this on his roadmap. I've been aware of this for a while and been in touch with him about it from time to time. I too look forward to the upgrade, when it comes!

A bigger problem might be that people have the same password on different sites... SSL gives a little additional protection against interception.

LinkedIn was hacked a few years ago and the hackers got lots of people's passwords. I keep getting junkmail saying they have my password (as if it also went to my email, my PC, facebook, etc., which it doesn't) and they'll ruin me if I don't send them money by bitcoin. They say they observed what sites I've been watching porn on (but no, I have never watched porn), say they saw me doing such-and-such (but no, I don't use any devices with a camera on them either, just a desktop and laptop with no camera, and I don't use a smartphone), etc.. They're wrong on everything, but they hope to scare someone into giving them money. I probably have a hundred passwords though. I don't re-use passwords. I have a different one for every account, as I encourage everyone else to also.

On the subject of hacked sites, this forum got hacked, too. And a warning message (below) was added, visible at the bottom of this page if you are not logged in. http://forum.6502.org/

Quote:
The forum database was compromised. Please change your password if you have not done so since May 24, 2012.
If you use the same password on any other sites, we strongly recommend changing it on those sites also.

Maybe after 8 years it's safe to remove the warning. Just a suggestion! :)

With thanks to all who keep this forum on the air,

-- Jeff

I am planning to add HTTPS soon as mentioned by others above.

I will remove the warning no later than May 24, 2022.
