Just for giggles I set up a Apple IIe as a Contiki web server last night. Told no one about it. By morning it was under DOS attack and now I can't have it running for more than a few seconds before the attack resumes. What kind of fetid worm gets their jollies doing that?

It turns out the 32-bit IP address space is rather small now, in comparison with the speed of computers, so the whole range can easily be scanned fairly rapidly. Which is to say, there's nowhere to hide. So, how ever many billions of good people there might be, the few bad apples can still cause trouble.

I should think there are possible tactics, which would leave your server accessible, but put it behind a safety fence. Cloudflare's service is free, and I've used them. Or it might be enough to serve on a different port. Maybe you could set up a second Apple II as a packet filter...
