I'm not sure why there are two (none SMD) sizes for canned oscillators. The DIP-8 and DIP-14.
My initial theory is that there are certain frequencies that are only available in either one. But it seems that most of the frequencies we care about (for 6502 based computers) are available in either size (or am I wrong?).
Having said that, why would anyone choose DIP-14? There must be a reason for the two sizes I'm just not familiar with.
Could someone clue me in on the reasons for the two sizes?
Thanks!
DIP14 oscillators are likely being stocked as replacement parts. I don't know of any particular reason to use one instead of a DIP8.
