You might check E-Bay from time to time: I have bought large lots of the Lattice GALs from fire sales where companies have large quantities on hand that are no longer needed, and they are happy to give them away for next to nothing.

I litterally have a lifetime supply of some of these chips (mostly 16v8 and 20v8 chips) that I bought for a very reasonable price.

I did that. I got another load of 50 16v8's for $10! with shipping they turned out be just $0.26 each. Cheaper than TTL! Only one drawback is they do suck a bit of juice, not not the best choice for low power jobs.

I am not that familiar with any DIP PLD's but I can contribute on another with Xilinx where I have some knowledge to go by.

XC9536 would probably be the smallest one with 44 pins VQFP. It can work very comfortably at 3.3V and at 5V.

If you are looking to use this, you can try looking for adapters so that you can try this one as an extension.
