Re: 65C02 computer with composite video generation

Hello everyone!

Finally, success! After some more fiddling (I realized that my vertical sync circuit was flawed but I corrected it relatively easily) and after finding out that my darn composite to vga converter box only works with interlaced video ( ) I finally have a working monochrome ...

Re: 65C02 computer with composite video generation

Hello everyone!

Very important progress to report! Finally, success! After 1 week of failure, I've obtained a beautiful...black screen! :D However, this means that the horizontal sync signal is correct, because I am using a composite to vga converter box that shows a blue screen if no input is ...

Re: 65C02 computer with composite video generation

I think you may be on the right track. A diagram would be a big help, I think. As you note, every gate and every multiplexor has a delay, so if you need one thing to happen before another, you do need to add up a collection of maximum delays and a collection of minimum delays and compare the two ...

Re: 65C02 computer with composite video generation

Hello everyone!

I've got some progress to report, but also I really need your help.

I've tested the video address generator and after some modifications, it now works correctly. I've obtained a nice graph with Octave to show how video memory is accessed which I will soon post.

Now, however ...

Re: 65C02 computer with composite video generation

Hello everyone!

I'm glad you like the design! :D the front panel is temporary, I will put something to cover the unused screw holes on the side.

In the mean time, some progress to report. I have complete the wiring of the video signal generation circuit and I'm testing it! I've found some issues ...

Re: 65C02 computer with composite video generation

I would say just be careful for the future ones. And (something obvious, but not yet mentioned), try to keep your hands clean while you're working. Wash them before you start, and be willing to wash them again periodically -- especially after touching your face, or pausing to eat your lunch, etc ...

Re: 65C02 computer with composite video generation

Hello everyone!

I've been away from the project for almost two months because of my job, but now I'm back at it. I've been busy during the Easter holidays however. I've made an enclosure for the computer using an old satellite tv receiver, and I've painted it a nice shade of blue  Also, I've ...

Re: 65C02 computer with composite video generation

The wire and pin need to be clean and free from skin oil in order to get a good chemical weld as you do the wire-wrapping. When you need to straighten the wire, pull it through tweezers or something like that. Thank you, so should I do something about the connections I have already made or just be ...

Re: 65C02 computer with composite video generation

Thank you very much both of you, I will get some ceramic capacitors then! :)

Out of curiosity, what is the effect of skin oil? Does it immediately cause bad conductivity or does it cause long term corrosion?
I realized that I may have touched some wires, to straighten them for example, before ...

Re: 65C02 computer with composite video generation

If the corners of the posts are sharp, there's no need to solder. I do not understand, do you suggest to wrap the leads of the bypass capacitors directly to the WW posts?

Regarding the problem of skin oils, I follow the "mitts off!" rule of the primer, and strip the wires right before wrapping ...

Re: 65C02 computer with composite video generation

There should be about a turn and a half of insulated wire wrapped on the post. Thank you for the suggestion, I read it from the WW primer (which really is a magnificent reference, thank you!), but I struggled to achieve it. I realized that my technique was wrong, but after some more practice I ...

Re: 65C02 computer with composite video generation

Hello everyone, and thanks for your kind help!

So, I've tried sanding down a couple of strips, using sand paper taped to a backer metal piece and holding the strip against the table, to ensure parallel flats and sharp corners. I have tested the connections with the method suggested by BigEd with ...

Re: 65C02 computer with composite video generation

Yes I assumed that a good sharp edge would be best for a proper bond, but then I should sand the pins one by one and I don't think I can get a clean result because I do not know how I could hold them steadily while sanding. Sanding the entire strip of 32 pins at a time is much easier, also to make ...

Re: 65C02 computer with composite video generation

A build log is a great idea, and I think it be fine as a continuation of this thread. It's nice if, when you have particular questions, you start a well-focussed thread on each question. Thank you, I will proceed this way!

Just a question: how do you plan to get your baby up and running?
You ...

Re: 65C02 computer with composite video generation

Hello you all!

Sorry for my late answer, I have been very busy at work!

If you plan on using a 65C02 that's made by WDC then it may be best to revise your schematic as noted, so only the PHI2 (formerly PHI0) pin is used.
That is definitely going to be my route here, thank you very ...
